I fell in love with realistic oil landscape painting when I took a class on the subject in the summer of 2010. Our class would go outside on a warm sunny morning, sit down on a patch of dew-drenched grass, and painted what we could see. It wasn’t until the following summer when I worked as a Search and Rescue Ranger at Yosemite National Park that I began to develop the current art form that I create.
While on the job in Yosemite, there wasn’t much time to paint from the field, so most imagery was captured using a digital camera. These photos became my inspiration for a series of oil landscapes completed in December 2011. My style developed into a photorealistic/romantic form as I worked towards making each piece resemble the image taken, while amplifying some hues or shading to add a touch of emotion to the piece.
This brings me to the purpose of my artwork—to capture the beauty and serenity of the natural world we see today for future generations, and to make a statement that we need to preserve and protect the wonderful landscapes that are available to us today. I hope that my audience will become aware that these places are sacred to us; without a combined effort to keep them, these landscapes could be lost forever.
